Growing up in San Francisco, my neighbor Mrs. McGuire introduced me to her garden with basil and tomatoes, a memory that lingers to this day. Making mud under the giant fig tree rooted me in a myriad of possibilities at my fingertips. My paternal grandmother gave me self-confidence through the art of making with embroidery, kitting and crochet. These early experiences, and living in a multi-cultural landscape forged a way of seeing through making.
My art practice with mixed media sculpture takes me on a journey of self-discovery unearthing awareness of a deeper part of myself; transforming negative emotions into beauty.
The thread of my creative process always begins with paper. Making and the art of transforming tangible fibre to an intangible pulp, returning to a tangible form, is very alluring for me. When beginning a new sculpture, my process always begins with a meditation with paper made by hand. Weaving with water, fiber and screen my imagination opens to new beginnings.
