Jacqueline Mallegni, Paper Rain Studio

Growing up in San Francisco, my neighbor Mrs. McGuire introduced me to her garden with basil and tomatoes, a memory that lingers to this day. Making mud under the giant fig tree rooted me in a myriad of possibilities at my fingertips. My paternal grandmother gave me a sense of confidence through the art of making with embroidery, kitting and crochet. These early experiences, and living in a multi-cultural landscape, forged a way of seeing through making.

My journey with paper and sculpture has ranged widely, encompassing everything from delicate light fixtures to commanding stone carvings and ethereal mixed-media sculptures. The guiding concept of merging art and life continually shapes my relationship with materials, compelling me to engage deeply with whatever captures my imagination. My work strives to translate the inspiration that arises from living in close harmony with wild landscapes, weaving together themes of the ethereal journey, motherhood, vacancy, loss, renewal, and the ways emotional responses can evoke an understated, profound beauty.

The thread of my creative process always begins with paper. Making and the art of transforming tangible fiber to an intangible pulp, returning to a tangible form, is very alluring for me. When beginning a new body of work, my process always begins with a meditation with paper made by hand. Weaving with water, fiber and screen my imagination opens to new beginnings.
