Perception seeing
Texture, shadow, form and light.
Ashes, dust and snow
My work with handmade paper and dimensionality provides moments in time where imagination, discovery and exploration of materials expands into form. Observing negative space is like a breath of fresh air for the mind, letting go of control while listening to what wants to emerge. Seeing an unspoken word, space between us and them, preened mating doves on a branch — reminds me time is fleeting. That art and life are interwoven into the fabric of creative process.
Working with paper and sculpture has varied from light fixtures to stone carving to ethereal mixed-media sculpture. The concepts of merging of art and life guides me to form a relationship with materials that captures my imagination. My work attempts to translate the inspiration that emerges from living alongside wild landscapes integrating concepts of the ethereal journey, motherhood, vacancy, loss, renewal and how emotional responses can evoke beauty.
The materials I converse with include rattan, handmade paper made with Broussonetia Payrifera (mulberry), Daphne sikokiana (gampi), and Edgeworthia chrysantha (mitsumata), cast flax and cellulose-based roving. Sometimes the work is embellished with mono-prints or infused with indigo, sumi ink, and handmade plant-based inks and stains.
