During my recent “Flax Fiber Collage” workshop we had a lengthly discussion about wabi-sabi…the quintessential Japanese aesthetic; the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. (Leonard Koren).
In this time of conflict and worldwide cultural diaspora we took comfort in the wabi-sabi spiritual value of truth comes from the observation of nature. We talked about how art making, creativity and nature helps access inner voices and our own true truth. Our interconnectedness with everything. Forgiveness and living in gratitude.
Why take a workshop? someone asked the other day. Because, since the beginning of evolution, our sense of humanity needs to share creative process and the art of making with others.
For this being, at this time, in this place, I need to feel the expanse of space and wild landscapes in order to access my creative expression through materiality. My relationship with materials has been an amazing guide through the ups and downs of life. We all have a story, whether we want to share it or not doesn’t matter. What matters is that there is a willingness to open oneself to creative process. Could be writing, painting, gardening, cooking.
How does the idea of merging art and life settle for you?
