Fiber & Dimension Workshop / ONLINE

$325.00

At this 3-day online workshop, explore the process of transforming delicate flax fiber into beautifully textured paper to create dimensional cast fiber sculpture.

We will work with surface embellishment techniques such as mark-making or stitching adding depth, color, and textured surfaces.

In this immersive, process-focused 3-day workshop, participants will acquire valuable methods for constructing sturdy yet flexible moulds using materials like wire mesh and plaster cloth, wire constructions, or natural materials such as twigs and vines, perfectly suited for handmade paper applications. This workshop warmly welcomes all skill levels, from beginners to experienced artists.

Workshop Outline:

  • Transform flax roving into textured paper with inclusions for texture and color.

  • Learn how to make a reusable mould with wire mesh and plaster cloth. This is great if you are interested in developing a series of multiples.

  • Build armatures with foraged materials such as twigs and vines (optional).

  • Use ink or stain for surface embellishment.

  • Your sculpture can be enhanced with stitching after drying.

Schedule:

  • Day 1. Design and make your mould with wire mesh and plaster cloth. Additionally, you are welcome to explore foraged materials as armatures.

  • Day 2: Make flax fiber paper to be applied over your mould(s).

  • Day 3: Remove the paper from the mould. Learn various ways of applying color and texture to your dried sculpture. We will explore next steps to finishing and/or refining surfaces.

Workshop Details:

  • This 3-day online workshop provides adequate time for drying between sessions.

  • A comprehensive materials and resource list will be sent via email upon registration.

  • The 3-day online workshop sessions run from 10 am to 2 pm MST (with lunch break).
